Cafe, Restaurant & Retail Design

In a commercial space design has a job: to increase how long a customer stays and how likely they are to return. Looking good is the means, not the end. That is why on commercial projects the first thing we discuss is not aesthetics but the business model.

How many covers are targeted, what the average dwell time is, where service comes from, which route staff take, where the queue forms at peak time. These questions determine the seating layout, the position of bar and kitchen, and corridor widths. A badly organised service flow makes even the most beautiful space exhausting.

The second determinant is light. A cafe that trades by day and one that trades in the evening cannot be lit the same way. The colour, direction and intensity of light affect everything from how the food looks to how the customer feels. In material selection, durability and cleanability carry equal weight with appearance.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a commercial interior take?

The design phase usually runs from a few weeks to a few months; the build period depends on the condition and scope of the space. If you have a fixed opening date we work the schedule backwards and start critical fabrication early.

How do you increase covers in a small shop?

Not by squeezing in chairs. Shortening the service flow, getting corridor widths right, using banquette seating along walls and mixing table types lets you host more people in the same area while keeping comfort.

Can the work be done while the venue stays open?

To a limited extent. Noisy and dusty work moves to closing hours and we work section by section. For a comprehensive refit, however, a short closure is usually both faster and cheaper.
