Concept Development

The concept is the sentence of a project. Any plan drawn before answering "what will this space say, for whom, with what feeling?" falls apart later. The concept stage is the cheapest stage at which to decide: changing your mind here is a drawing revision, changing it during construction means taking things apart and rebuilding.

At this stage we write the spatial scenario, review references together, establish the material palette and colour approach, and set out the rough spatial arrangement. The aim is not to resolve details but to face the right direction.

In commercial projects in particular, the concept is the brand itself. The seating arrangement of a cafe, the warmth of its light and the texture of its materials tell a customer what kind of place it is before the menu does. In housing, the concept is the first step in translating a family's way of living into space.

Frequently asked questions

Can we skip the concept stage and go straight to the project?

You can, but it is risky. The concept is the stage at which we make sure everyone understands the same thing. Skip it and, midway through the construction drawings, someone says "this is not what I had in mind" — and at that point changes cost both time and money.

What do you deliver in a concept presentation?

The spatial scenario, a rough layout, the material and colour palette, reference images and, where needed, 3D perspectives. The aim is to put enough information clearly in front of you to make a decision.

What if I do not like the concept?

We revise it — that is what it is for. We define the number of revision rounds in the contract from the start. If the direction is to change entirely we discuss that and redefine the scope.
